Today, CESI held a successful CESI@noon lunchtime debate on 'Artificial intelligence and algorithmic management at work'.

The objective of the event was to discuss with policy makers and stakeholders how to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithmic management (AM) in the workplace, following a the adoption of a legislative initiative report of the European Parliament in December 2025, and in the context of CESI's trade union demands on AI and AM at work and issue paper on fairness and proection for workers in AI-driven workplaces. It featured interventions from:

  • MEP Andrzej Buła (EPP), Rapporteur on digitalisation, AI & algorithmic management at work
  • MEP Irena Joveva (Renew), Shadow rapporteur on digitalisation, AI & algorithmic management at work
  • Carmelo Cennamo, Affiliate Professor of Digital Transformation at Bocconi University in Milan and Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship at Copenhagen Business School
  • Maxime Legrand, President of the European Confederation of Executives and Managerial Staff (CEC European Managers) and Chair of the CEC Working Group on Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence
  • Sara Rinaudo, Deputy Secretary General of the Italian Fismic-Confsal trade union and Chair of CESI’s Working Group on the Future of Work

The event was moderated by CESI Secretary General Klaus Heeger.

It emerged during the discussions that the following themes need to be covered by EU and national level policy makers and social partners in a careful regulatory balance:

  1. worker rights protection including guarantees for human-centric AI and the principle of humans in control over consequential decisions
  2. transparency, privacy and anti-surveillance safeguards
  3. tailored and effective training in AI literacy and up- and re-skilling for workers affected by AI-induced disruptions and adaption processes
  4. strong and encompassing information and consultation frameworks and social dialogue in AI/AM tools planning, deployment, implementation, monitoring and review

Speakers agreed that, with a right regulatory approach, European businesses can compete in the global tech arena, while workers can be effectively protected from adverse developments - so taht workers rights and thriving business environments can go together hand in hand.
