2026 European heat waves and wildfires: Support statement by CESI for all those affected
CESI stands with all those protecting Europe and all those affected.
We, the European Confederation of Independent Trade Unions, representing firefighters and workers across the emergency services, express our deepest gratitude and solidarity with all firefighters, civil protection teams, healthcare professionals, police officers, emergency responders and frontline workers protecting lives and communities during this summer's devastating heat waves and wildfires across Europe.
Our heartfelt sympathy goes to all those who have lost loved ones, homes or livelihoods, and to everyone who has been affected by these extreme weather events. Our condolences go to the to the families, friends and colleagues of the firefighters and other emergency services workers who lost their lives while protecting others. We honour their courage and sacrifice.
As climate-related emergencies become more frequent and severe, emergency services workers and other frontline professionals are on the front line of protecting our societies. They deserve not only our recognition, but also safe working conditions, adequate staffing, modern equipment, specialised training, mental health support and the resources needed to respond effectively.
The current crisis shows that climate adaptation is also about civil protection, public health, occupational safety and resilient public services. Recent EU initiatives—including the Preparedness Union Strategy and the Council Recommendation on Integrated Wildfire Risk Management—provide an important framework. These commitments must now be translated into concrete support for the workers who respond to climate emergencies every day.
