Catarina Reis de Oliveira is the Head of Unit of Research and International Relations of the High Commission for Immigration and Intercultural Dialogue (ACIDI) since 2005. Since 2007 she is also the Editorial Coordinator of Migrações Journal of the Portuguese Immigration Observatory. She has a background in Sociology, MA in Statistics and a Certificate in Migration Studies. Her PhD research is on Immigrant entrepreneurial strategies in Portuguese cities. From 2001 till 2005 she was Lecture in the Sociology Department of the New University of Lisbon, namely in a post-graduate course on Migration, Ethnic Minorities and Transnationalism.
Among the most relevant projects and networks that she have been involved are: until 2005, she was part of the team of the Portuguese Focal Point of the European Racism and Xenophobia Information Network (RAXEN) from 2004 till 2008, she was the coordinator of the EU Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurs Network (network organized by the European Commission DG Enterprises), representing ACIDI; and from 2007 till 2009 she was the European coordinator of the INTI project One-Stop-Shop: a new answer for immigrants’ integration.
She has published extensively on migration in general and on immigrant entrepreneurship, in particular, including book chapters, journal articles and four books – Handbook on how to implement a One-Stop-Shop for Immigrant Integration (2009), Immigration and work accidents (2010) The entrepreneurial strategies of immigrants in Portugal (2004) and Entrepreneurs of Immigrant origin (2005). In October 2008 she also co-organised a special issue on Immigrant Entrepreneurship in several countries to the Migrações Journal. In 1999-2000 she was awarded a Merit Scholarship by the New University of Lisbon and an academic award in Multiculturalism and Ethnicity in the Contemporary society by the Gulbenkian Foundation.
