In an article written for Euractiv this month CESI Secretary General Klaus Heeger writes “If the conclusions from the last EU summit refer to the ´social challenge´ of unemployment, the European Commission can now be considered the more realistic of EU institutions in referring to a ´social crisis,´”.

Portugal: The long and painful path of austerity

This week Klaus Heeger, CESI Secretary General contributed an article to the EurActive website, one of the EU´s leading media outlets. The article, entitled Portugal: The long and painful path of austerity, aims to underline the vicious circle of unemployment and recession which has resulted from the continued imposition of austerity measures. Whilst the economic outlook at present looks gloom, there is a glimmer of hope in the form of the Portuguese Constitutional Court hearing which ruled against cuts to public sector salaries and pensions.
