Europe Academy symposium: "The future of old-age pension schemes" From 26 until 28 February, 2007, the Europe Academy, CESI’s Research and Further Training Centre, is holding an international symposium entitled "The future of old- age pension schemes" in the dbb forum in Berlin. The conference, which is expected to be attended by around 150 people from all over Europe, is the first of three events devoted to the topic "Europe’s demographic challenge - ways out of the crisis". The presentations and discussions with high-ranking experts will offer the chance to present various models of old-age pension schemes as well as examine the outlook for the future. This also includes factors such as old-age poverty, a sense of fairness amongst the generations and the notion of a pension based on how many children one has. The keynote speaker is the German Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Franz Müntefering. Other speakers are Johann Hahlen (State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior), Prof. Gert G. Wagner (German Evangelical Church), Prof. Winfried Schmähl (Bremen University), Ralf Brauksiepe (Member of the Bundestag), Klaus Dauderstädt (Chairman of the GdS trade union) and Ruth Paserman (European Commission). Peter Heesen, dbb National Chairman and President of the Europe Academy, observed: "Falling birth rates and a growing number of older people in the population are presenting European societies with serious challenges. Trade unions must also deal with this issue. Our range of events aims to highlight these challenges and, with the help of experts, develop strategies to tackle them." |
