18-01-2007: CESI: EU Council president
on the right track CESI’s leaders have voiced their clear approval of the speech made by EU Council President Merkel to the European Parliament on 17 January, 2007. "We welcome the fact that the German Council presidency has made the maintenance and development of the European Social Model a focal point", remarked General Secretary Helmut Müllers in his initial reaction to the speech. "It is important that, even in an age of globalisation, social standards are upheld. Like Ms Merkel, CESI feels the crux of the matter lies first and foremost in employment. Ms Merkel’s declaration of intent demonstrates that she is on the right track." "Ms Merkel’s announcement to breathe new life into the constitutional process is something CESI is equally pleased to note", observed CESI President Valerio Salvatore. "CESI supports the draft constitution and hopes the constitution will be passed by spring 2009. An EU of 27 and more Member States needs better rules of procedure if it wants to remain workable." "Europe - succeeding together. The independent trade unions are unreserved in their support of this, the motto of the German Council Presidency. CESI is ready to do its part in making it come true", concluded Müllers and Salvatore. |
