11-10-2006: CESI rejects Commissioner Verheugen's "impertinent" and "excessive" criticism

CESI General Secretary Helmut Müllers reacted with disbelief to EU Commissioner Verheugen's recent criticism of high-ranking EU officials: "I also speak on behalf of the many EU officials whom CESI counts amongst its members when I say that I reject Mr Verheugen's remarks most emphatically. For independent trade unions, his comments are impertinent and utterly excessive. We expect a clarification and a public apology from Mr Verheugen."
"I believe that EU officials are the very embodiment of the European spirit of the EU institutions. It is these highly-qualified individuals who keep the cogs of the Community turning, to the benefit of EU citizens", stressed Müllers.
Müllers continued: "If Mr Verheugen has the impression that some EU officials fail to defer to the commissioners in their work, I believe this points rather to a lack of leadership. Incidentally, I would also like to point out that the staff regulations provide for sufficient penalties in the event of wrongdoing on the part of officials."
