Services directive - CESI's message to the European Parliament: Liberalisation -
yes, social dumping - no In the light of the vote due to take place on 16 February, 2006 in the European Parliament concerning the services directive, CESI once again appealed to MEPs to pay sufficient regard to employee interests. General Secretary Helmut Müllers and President Valerio Salvatore addressed a joint letter on the subject to the leaders of the political groups in the European Parliament, in which they once again summarised CESI's three core demands: 1. the exclusion of services of general economic interest 2. the exclusion of health care services and 3. the abolition of the 'country of origin' principle. Speaking on the subject, Helmut Müllers made the following observation: "Debates over the past few weeks have been, at times, extremely emotionally-charged. The independent trade unions still feel that proposals made by rapporteur Evelyne Gebhardt constitute a balanced compromise: liberalising the service sector would unleash a not inconsiderable potential for growth, but social dumping would be prevented." Müllers added "The employees of Europe - CESI, after all, represents approximately eight million workers - are waiting for a clear signal from the European Parliament. A vital factor in the European unification process is a strong social dimension, so people gain a greater trust once more in Europe and its institutions." |
