During the European Economic and Social Committee's conference on the Lisbon process from 8 to 10 October 2003 the president of the CESI, Valerio Salvatore, demanded that the efforts at modernizing the European social model should be put on a broader basis.

"The agenda set up in Lisbon in 2000 is an extremely ambitious project. In view of the difficult economic basic conditions a common effort is necessary in order to make progress. We cannot do without the knowledge that is gathered in Europe. The consultation of the civil society has to be strengthened and better coordinated on European, national, and local level."

This is especially true for the social dialogue, which, according to the president of the European Confederation of Independent Trade Unions, should be expanded to more employees and their representatives.
